Lead tokens, Lead, as it is soft and prone to oxidisation, has rarely been used for coinage and never in England but since it is cheap and easy to melt and cast, coin-like objects of lead, sometimes also of pewter and tin, were widely produced in medieval times up to the nineteenth century. Pit Tokens. The majority of tokens / badges here are from Nottinghamshire and are Trade Union badges, there is the odd miners time check and riding check. The miners would have been issued these by the Notts Miners Association or N.M.A., for a small fee, and would have worn them as proof of their membership to the union. These badges would have been sown onto their owners' cap or jacket lapel via the two small fastening holes provided. Time checks were used to prove the miner was in work to get paid and riding checks allowed them to travel down the mine.
